  Over breakfast the next morning, Bill admitted he hadn’t slept a wink. “It was if that old man was right there in the room with us,” he explained.

  Virginia looked stricken with each word. “Uh oh, I just remembered,” she said.

  “What do you mean?” I asked.

  “I am so sorry. To you two and to ——. I’ve been storing his ashes in that little box in the apartment. He must want me to do what I promised. I will have to go up to the cemetery and scatter them.”

  Bill and I looked at each other, and try as we might, we couldn’t help but laugh. We’ve stayed in the little apartment countless times since that first night, and Bill has always slept soundly. The old man hasn’t made another appearance in Bill’s dreams since Virginia scattered his ashes.
